INSTRUCTIONS FOR SOIL-SPROUT KITS
GENERAL KIT INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL SEEDS
Unpack The Daily Gardener Soil-Sprout Kit. The quantity will depend on the kits size, but every kit will have the following items:
- 1 gallon bag(s) of Daily Gardener Soil Mix
- Aluminum Trays for planting
- 1 month supply of seeds
- 1 bag of VT Compost Plus fertilizer
- 1 bag of Dried Kelp fertilizer
- Sheets of newsprint paper for tray covers Instruction sheet
Preparations: To begin, first pour 3 cups of water into the 1 gallon plastic bag of The Daily Gardener Soil Mix. Reseal and let the bag sit while the seeds are soaking or until you are ready to plant. If you purchased a kit with several bags of mix you can fill them all at the same time even though you will not be using the soil mix for a few weeks.
Wash the seed thoroughly, strain, then soak the seeds in a jar or bowl. Soak the seed for about 6 hours. If you are planning to plant in the afternoon or evening put the seed in a bowl and cover with water in the morning. Make sure the water level is about ½” above the level of the seeds, the seeds will absorb lots of water, and we want to make sure there is plenty of water for them. I like to use the little mason jars for soaking, but anything that holds water will work! My general routine is to soak seeds at night and plant the next morning.
Place a tablespoon of compost and a pinch of dried Kelp at the bottom of the pan then fill the aluminum pan with moistened soil mix to a ¼” below the top and level it off. Do not pack the soil. I like to do this on newspapers to keep the kitchen table clean. If you have a garden workbench you can skip the newspaper! Drain the seeds. Soak 2 sheets of the blank newsprint paper included in The Daily Gardener Kit for each tray you are planting. Now you are ready to plant the seeds. You can prepare the trays ahead so they are ready to plant or fill them as needed.
